Cinderella and True Stories (but really just Cinderella)

I chose to write on Cinderella, it was the one that stuck out to me most and it wasn't a poem I enjoyed, regardless of the extra detailed misfortunes.

  • Within the first couple stanzas, this seems to be a poem speaking of all types of Cinderella stories; "from toilets to riches (line4)," "from diapers to Dior (line 10), "from homogenized to martinis at lunch (line 16), "from mops to Bonwit Teller (Line 20)." I've heard about other forms of the story Cinderella and many other fairy tales that were originally nothing like the glamorous Disney versions. I guess I just didn't expect such drastic details such as the step sisters cutting off parts of their feet to fit the shoe (Lines 81-83 & 88) or the dove pecking their eyes out (Lines 97-99)

  1. The Brothers' Grimm earned their name, and Cinderella is far from the most horrifying of their stories. I would recommend you read some of their other works, they are drastically different from the Disney portrayal that so many of us associate the stories with.

  2. If you ever get a chance, you should read the original Grimm fairy tales. They are quite gruesome and violent, nothing like the way Disney depicts them. However, they are still very well and I found it interesting to read where these classic Disney movies actually came from.

  3. It is a very surprising story! Disney's adaptation has very little to do with it, right? You might find the "real story" of the Little Mermaid interesting because she basically gives up her voice and spends time with the prince and even though they have a nice time together, the Prince marries some Spanish princess instead (under no influence of the Sea Witch) and dumps Ariel. In the end, Ariel's sisters cut their hair and give it to the Sea Witch in exchange for a knife that Ariel can kill the prince with. In killing the prince, she will be able to be a mermaid again but when the time comes to kill the prince, Ariel sees how peacefully he sleeps with his new wife and cannot bring herself to do it. So she decides to kill herself instead. Very sad. Very, very sad. But true!
